The City of Calgary has released the results of an Environics Research study that examined Calgarians’ attitudes regarding the legalization of recreational cannabis. This study explored a wide range of issues related to how cannabis will be regulated by municipal governments, including:

  • Expectations regarding public consumption rules and enforcement
  • Attitudes regarding how cannabis-related businesses are sited and zoned
  • Expectations regarding operating hours for cannabis retailers
  • Attitudes towards home growing of cannabis
  • Views on how cannabis taxes will be shared with municipalities

The study also included a segmentation of Calgary residents based on their attitudes towards cannabis legalization and their underlying social values.

Study Methodology

This study included a telephone survey with a randomly selected sample of 1,002 Calgarians, five focus groups with Calgary residents, and 30 in-depth interviews with individuals planning to become involved in producing and/or selling legal cannabis.
